Snippets of this Latin phrase can be heard when the crew first arrives on the Event Horizon and begins piecing together the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the crew. An audio log in the ship's computer was the only communique sent back to Earth, and it was difficult to make out.
Later in the film, D.J. deciphers a much more clear computer log with the phrase "Libera tutemet ex inferis" in the background, which roughly translates to "save yourself from Hell." It was a chilling line that helped set the tone for the entire second act of the film.

In general relativity, there is a yawning black hole at the center of the galaxy sustained by the essences of the all the worlds that it has destroyed. Everything corporeal is destined to one day be swept over its event horizon. The black hole sits like an ever-expanding open drain at the bottom of the ocean.
